Healthy Chocolate Spread

Everyone loves chocolate spread, don’t they? I don’t think there’s anything better than a hot piece of toast smothered in rich chocolate spread, a yogurt bowl drizzled with chocolate spread or just a great big spoonful straight from the jar!

However chocolate spread from the supermarkets normally contains a lot of sugar as well as dairy so it’s often not suitable for a lot of people. That doesn’t mean we have to miss out on the joys of chocolate spread though, because this easy-peasy 10 minute chocolate spread recipe is not only rich, smooth, creamy and sweet but it’s also refined sugar free, dairy free, soy free, nut free and gluten free!

  • 180g medjool dates
  • 500ml almond milk
  • 3 tbsp cacao powder
  • 1 tbsp coconut oil
  • Pinch of salt
Prep Time


  1. Pit the dates and add them to a saucepan with the almond milk over a low heat. Allow to gently simmer for 6-8 minutes, stirring regularly. Set the mixture aside to completely cool.

  2. Add the date and almond milk mixture to your Ninja Kitchen food processor along with the cacao powder, coconut oil and a pinch of salt. Blend on the high speed setting for a couple of minutes, then stir the mixture and blend again until smooth.

  3. Transfer the chocolate spread mixture into a jar or air-tight container, then place in the fridge to cool where it will thicken up. I recommend allowing to cool for at least 2 hours for the best consistency before tucking in.
